The private, American tax payer-funded, global intelligence agency, Stratfor, was hacked in December of 2011 by who many believe to be the Anonymous “hacktivist” group.
Anonymous stole over 5 gigabytes (including 5 million emails) of information from Stratfor who has likened itself to a private version of the CIA.
Wikileaks and founder Julian Assange have released those files to the public even though Assange claims to have no ties to Anonymous.
Based on the emails, Stratfor allegedly spied on Occupy, PETA, Vancouver Olympic and Coca-Cola protesters (Tea Party not mentioned) and other “political enemies” and allegedly sold that information to third parties. Those third parties allegedly include the Turkish government and Goldman Sachs.
CEO George Friedman has told his workers (many who have former ties to the FBI and CIA) to take control of valuable sources when seeking information. Controls includes “[…] financial, sexual or psychological control to the point where he would reveal his sourcing and be tasked.”
In an email, Friedman gloated, saying that he was glad to be someone who served the world. As the Chicago Tribune columnist Rachel Marsden noted, “A CIA officer who ‘serves the world’ from his platform is typically put on trial for being a mole.”
With the high-ranking officials within the military going to Stratfor workers for intelligence that even the government lacks, it is unbeknownst to the public why Stratfor hasn’t been shut down, investigated and/or tried for treason.
